Last week in review

Open house came. I had the felicity of hearing the spiel of the teacher who shares my room.. way more organized than mine. One of the parents, in a friendly way, told me that I should never tell children that my daughter is married to a woman- they teach their children that that sort of thing is wrong. I hope this does not become a problem, because on reflection I think gay teens and their peers need to hear it. I did not advocate nor dwell on it, but I answered a few questions.

I really need to work on the things in my SHHH file: ways to quiet children. And on sticking to my own procedures.

I wish I could be better prepared for each class. Realistically, though, keeping up 2 rooms and traveling makes it difficult. Sometimes I succeed.

Last Week in the Art Room

Reflection: The second week of school flew by. My southern middle school eighth graders are noisy, and my northern middle school 7th graders likewise. Despite all the procedures practice we did, I really need to REMEMBER to stick to my guns and make them take a number, stay in their seats, and give me their attention. I am not good enough at consequences.
In other news: A new teacher is next door at one of my schools. She has the eighth grade from hell (well, not really. That one was sixth period about 2002! But close enough). They are noisy and so disrespectful that they continue their casual-level conversations right over her teaching, I think. They are far worse than mine in the hall, but they were that way for me last semester. I wish I could help her!
I need to get Artsonia up.
I got out my Nexus and let my 6th and 7th graders at the northern MS see Aurasma. Several students got so excited they had to make one right then. Satisfying.
We began Name Kaleidoscopes in the 6th, and Illuminated initials in the 7th and 8th at S school, contour at N school. I hope to start clay but desperately need clay.

I don't have time for this

This is a brief start. I mainly got an account so I could comment to cim. Today is a tax holiday so I will soon go shopping. I promise to put blogging ahead of cleaning!

San Francisco was a blast, but a cold one. We walked around mostly near the bay, and in the Castro and several other neighborhoods. The gardens were in containers mostly, and they were magnificent! Pelargoniums were trees, with 4 inch trunks. Jade trees stayed outside in tubs. Bougainvillea was everywhere, and agapanthus.

It was great seeing Cim and Wax. Way too short for me but way too long for Perry- I was sorry to hear that.

School starts her for teachers on 7 days. I have stuff to do there but can hardly drag myself there. I think they made our day 8 minutes longer but kept the same number of calendar days. Gives us more days of professional development, and I hope at least a little more work-in-your-room time. I have (nothing new) TWO rooms to maintain. One of them a janitor never set foot inside except to empty trash cans. I know, count your blessings. I will be enraged if I dwell on this, so enough of that.

I am making student storage at that school and need to get on the stick. Today.

I read a mystery by Tamar Myers yesterday-- Baroque and Desperate. Hilarious-- an author who sometimes sacrifices making sense for a laugh, but not too often. My kind of character is the narrator. A southern lady, but not a sweet one. I plan to read them all. So far I read this one and the first. The series is the Den of Antiquity, and the main character is a divorced antiques dealer, who spends some time with her eccentric mother, and less with her goof-up children, but stays involved nonetheless.
